A bother and a blessing
by Jess Coubrough
My darling baby, at last you’ve arrived,
So long inside me, nine months you survived.
Kicking, bouncing, ready to come out,
Eager to meet us, I have no doubt.
And here you are, my bundle of joy,
So small and sweet, a perfect decoy.
The truths of motherhood now clear and true,
A bother and a blessing, I s'pose that’s you!
“What's that smell?” I repeatedly say,
Changing your nappy, day after day,
Sick on my top, on your new baby grow,
Dirty washing, that continues to flow.
Exhausted, tired, craving a nap,
Emotions so high, ready to snap.
Endless cries and a smell that lingers,
Your gentle touch, grasping my fingers.
A yank of my hair, as I smirk through the pain,
Always forgetful, thanks “baby brain.”
My babe, the source of these highs and lows,
A beautiful creature with tiny toes.
A gift to us, feelings I can't explain,
Unconditional love that will always remain.
A bother through life you may well be,
But I'll cherish every second, I promise thee.
